What is our group about?

The CCYFS Program at a Glance

Who we are: We are a performance group open to kids ages 6-19. Our group includes violins, guitars, pianos, drums and an accordion.

Group practices:

Group practice is always on a Tuesday after school and usually happens twice a month.

Workshops:

We aim to provide 3 week long (after school and Saturday) workshops a year where a guest instructor helps teach new music to the group. These are normally held in September, January/February and the end of May.

Performances:

We aim for at least 5-6 community performances during the year as well as a putting on a large scale show at the Gibraltar Room every other year. Our next show will be in May 2026.

Travel:

There are opportunities for senior members to travel. In the last few years there have been trips to Halifax, Ireland and the Yukon. This year in July some members will be traveling to Ireland.

  • Beginner Students: Students require basic instrument knowledge before registering. This means the student has taken private lessons or group lessons (such as music camp) to learn basics. Fiddle students need to know one tune, guitar students to know a handful of chords and piano students to know 3 full chords on piano and play a 3 note triad.

  • Registration Fees:  Tuition includes all workshops and group practices. The 2025 registration amount for each student is $300.  We are able to keep fees low through fundraisers and sponsorships.

  • Performances:  Performances play an important role in obtaining funding and enabling students to showcase their learning and to give back to their community.

  • Workshops: Workshops are a wonderful opportunity for students to learn from high-calibre instructors from around the country. The workshops are normally held in September, January/February and the end of May and often culminate in some kind of fun event like a barn dance.

    • Frozen Strings: Frozen Strings is our winter workshop. After doing after school sessions during the week the students and their families head out to Gavin Lake on Friday afternoon and spend the weekend playing music, socializing and getting to enjoy all Gavin Lake has to offer. Not to be missed

  • Parent involvement: Parent involvement is a vital and necessary part of the CCYFS. The program 's success and longevity rely heavily upon parents’ taking on jobs throughout the year.

    • Fundraising: All families are expected to help keep our registration fees low by participating in fundraisers such as Operation Red Nose and bottle drives.

    • Supervision:  Parents are fully responsible for their children during non-instructional times at all workshops and practices. Families are encouraged to coordinate with each other to provide supervision during these times.

  • Instrument care:  It is each student’s responsibility to store his/her instrument safely during breaks at all CCYFS events and workshops. The Cariboo-Chilcotin Youth Fiddle Society accepts no responsibility for the care and safe keeping of these instruments.

  • Instrument rentals:  We have Society-owned violins for beginner level players.
